Out and about in and around Montpellier

Nature in the city
If you don’t want to leave central Montpellier then head to its many parks and gardens. We recommend a stroll around the stunning Jardin des Plantes, a picnic in Frédéric Bazille’s beloved Domaine de Méric or time out to soak up the Jardin Royal du Peyrou, its views and Sunday flea market!

By bike
Do you “wheelie” want to explore the city by bike? If the answer’s yes, bike hire shops and tour operators will be delighted to help you and suggest the right ride for you!

Greater Montpellier
Montpellier is bursting with treasures to unearth outside the city! For example, you can go on a lovely walk on the footpaths at the Nature House in Lattes, along the Castries Aqueduct, the Saltworks in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone or take time out by Lake CrèsCheck out our selection of outings

A little jaunt to the beach

The sea is just 11km from Place de la Comédie!  Villeneuve-lès-Maguelonebeach is untouched by urbanisation and brings you a unique experience.

Walk to the sea on the mobile footbridge over the canal. You can leave your car at the car park before hitting a narrow pebble and sand path to the beach. You could even hop on board the tourist train (free in high season).

Make a beeline for the peninsula after a well-earned dip. The impressive Maguelone Cathedral looms over the sea, vineyards and lagoons. Montpellier’s biggest cathedral is a masterpiece of Languedoc romanesque art where you can cool off and feast on oysters.

Would you rather just soak up the beach vibes?

The season of deckchairs, seaside meals and laidback evenings starts in April. There are around thirty private beaches between Le Grau-du-Roi and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone.

Think driftwood, crisp white and minimalism at Carré Mer (Villeneuve-les-Maguelone), exotic wood at Effet Mer (Grand Travers )… Every “paillotte” beach bar has its own personality, cool design and premium Mediterranean dishes.
