MONTPELLIER CANDIDATE TO BECOME EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2028

Let yourself be surprised by the cultural effervescence of Montpellier and its surrounding area. You’ll be swept away by its festive and creative energy, its feasts and festivals galore, its endless encounters…

Montpellier-Sète’s bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2028 was selected from among the nine cities that submitted applications.
There are now four cities in the running for the final.

A REGION COMMITTED TO CULTURE

Behind the Montpellier-Sète bid lies the union of six territories in the Hérault region. Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, of course, but also the agglomeration communities of Sète and Agde and the commune communities of Pays de Lunel, Grand Pic-Saint-Loup and Vallée de l’Hérault (around Gignac), totalling 132 communes.

They are all embarking on an adventure that is as exciting as it is unique: a bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2028.

The 3 other finalists are Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand and Bourges.

This bid will encourage the emergence of new routes linking regions and residents. It will breathe new life into the destination’s cultural ambitions.

Events throughout the year

As part of the bid, there will be a number of highlights throughout the year!

On the schedule: exhibitions, music, dance, walking tours, walks, banquets, meetings, workshops and shows…

They are built around several concepts and themes.

Three concepts and three moments: Connect, Act, Celebrate.

  • CONNECT, understood as both connecting ourselves and connecting with living things.
  • ACTING, i.e. taking into account and integrating on the one hand, and acting, encapacitating on the other.
  • CELEBRATE, or build a time for the event and give meaning to the common.

Three artistic axes: Water that connects us, Future in series, Trans?

The water that connects us: the territories of water, like the water that constitutes us.
The Futur in series: building new narratives of change, but also changing the relationship with the work to integrate it into a creative process, building evolving aesthetics, integrating reality and science.
Trans? Trans is what passes, what flows. It’s about questioning a problematic prefix that is emblematic of our times (transnational, transgeneration, transmedia, transition, transdisciplinary…). But trance is also one of the states of celebration.
