Situated within the municipalities of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, Mireval and Vic-la-Gardiole, 15 km south west of the city of Montpellier (400,000 inhabitants) and 25 km north east of the Thau conurbation (90,000 inhabitants), the Villeneuve salt marshes cover an area of 292 hectares from the banks of the Etang de Vic to the foot of the Gardiole range. Connected to the Vic, Moures and Pierre blanche lagoons, the protected natural landscape of the Villeneuve salt marshes forms part of an outstanding lagoon complex covering 1,817 hectares, within the 6,015 hectares of Palavasian lagoons. It comprises a patchwork of natural environments, comprising both fresh water and salt water where numerous remarkable species, birds in particular, come to breed or to feed.
