Boussagues is a fortified medieval village nestled in a fold of the upper Orb valley, and is the architectural jewel of the region. Its lords established a citadel here in the 11th century (the Castellas or Château haut), from where they dominated the territory economically and politically. A network of medieval alleyways enclosed by ramparts developed at the foot of the Castellas over the following centuries, and numbered up to 1,500 inhabitants around 1350.
