Montpellier Méditerranée Ancient city A thousand years of history

Montpellier Heritage : A thousand years of history

Heritage lovers will be seduced by Montpellier and its relaxed atmosphere. Art in the city, medieval alleys, the sea just around the corner, walks in the garrigue…!

Nearly 70 sumptuous private mansions, an Arc de Triomphe and a Place Royale du Peyrou erected to the glory of Louis XIV, medieval alleys, the oldest faculty of medicine in the world… Here, aesthetics is combined with the past, the present and the future!

Fountains galore, including that of the Trois Graces, to mention only the best known of them, a pedestrianised “Écusson” city centre, colourful trams that combine gentle mobility and modernity, street art in all four corners of the city, not forgetting the feats of contemporary architecture that have made Montpellier a benchmark in this field… An open-air museum, created by all, for all.

Visiting Montpellier Going on a cultural journey

Strolling on the Place de la Comédie

The place de la Comédie, Montpellier’s iconic heart, is the top place to visit. Once known as the Place de l’Oeuf (Egg Square) because of its oval shape, it is one of the largest pedestrian precincts in Europe and is dominated by the imposing Opéra Comédie. In the centre, the ‘Three Graces’ stand proudly, a fountain and statue built in 1773.

Visiting the Musée Fabre de Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole

This museum is considered to be one of the finest Fine Arts Museums in Europe – its ancient and modern architecture makes it quite exceptional. It houses European works from the Renaissance to the present day and has a wing devoted exclusively to contemporary artist, Pierre Soulages.

Getting lost in the medieval streets

Montpellier is bursting with tiny medieval streets symbolizing its glorious history . Rue de la Valfère, Rue du Bras de Fer, Rue de L’Argenterie are sure to take you back in time and introduce you to a whole new world… Our recommendation? Forget all about your map, and just follow your instincts as you wend your way along these narrow streets.

Opening the doors to the beautiful courtyards of private mansions

Massive gates, huge, luminous courtyards, stairs with wrought-iron balustrades – Montpellier and its surrounding area together boast almost 80 private mansions of the classical period. Nowadays these private courtyards, veritable hidden gems, can only be visited on guided tours organised by the Tourist Office.

Urban stroll through the districts

In Montpellier, every neighbourhood is unique, illustrating 1,000 years of history.

A mix of modern and ancient architecture taking you from medieval streets to architectural feats designed by Ricardo Bofill, Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid…everything, in one of the 4 haute couture tram lines.

Street Art in the city: a dreamily nice walk !

In the historical center, you don’t know where to look: painted markers on Place St Roch, other trompe-l’oeil, collages, bicycles in the walls … Here, a smiling moon painted on a trash container, there, a mosaic space invader, over there stencils with hearts …

Without forgetting a little tour on the Verdanson quays, a veritable gallery of urban art!
