Opera in three acts, inspired by Ariosto?s Orlando furioso, premiered at London?s Theatre Royal Covent Garden on April 16, 1735.
After Il primo omicidio and Giulio Cesare, Philippe Jaroussky will once again lead his Artaserse ensemble to begin exploring this miraculous trilogy of "A "s (Arianna, Ariodante and Alcina). To compete with Porpora?s troupe, which had engaged Farinelli, Handel brought Giovanni Carestini from Italy, composing virtuoso and moving pages for him. For this concert production, three of the finest voices of our time will be on stage at the Opéra Berlioz: Kathryn Lewek in the title role, Carlo Vistoli as Ruggiero and Katarina Bradi? as Bradamante. Their talents combine to bring to life love, magic and deception, interwoven as never before in this sparkling opera seria.
Sung in Italian, with French surtitles
