The new exhibition "Horses, forgotten heroes? Archaeology of a species through time" will be on display from April 5, 2025 to January 5, 2026 at the Site archéologique Lattara-musée Henri Prades of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.
This exhibition presents the fruit of groundbreaking interdisciplinary research on horses, at the crossroads of ecology and archaeology. These animals, which have been so close to us throughout the history of mankind, offer a complex history of their evolution and the relationships established with mankind since the dawn of time. Attempting to tell this story invites each visitor to engage in an original process of reflection, with the aim of enriching our perception of the links that unite us, humans and horses, by reconstructing their living conditions as closely as possible.
To better understand the individual history of the horses at the protohistoric site of Pech Maho at Sigean in the Aude region, the archaeozoological study of this population, dated to the end of the 3rd century BC, will be cross-referenced with the current population of Przewalski?s horses, preserved by the Takh association on the Causse Méjean.
The highly interdisciplinary approach is based on archaeozoological methods and associated sciences such as isotopic biochemistry, molecular biology and paleoecology (morphometry, dental wear, cementochronology). The challenge is to test these methods on the cranial remains of actual horses made available by the TAKH association (Przewalski horse conservation center, Lozère).
The archaeological museum is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am-12pm and 1:30pm-5:30pm,
saturday and Sunday, 2pm-7pm (April 1 to October 31).
Closed on Tuesdays.
Admission to the museum is free for under-18s.
Free admission for all on the 1st Sunday of each month.
