The new exhibition for children aged 3 to 6, "Fouille-Farfouille, aventure-toi dans le temps!" will be on show from June 4 to August 31, 2025 at Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's Site archéologique Lattara-musée Henri Prades.
Sleeping, washing, playing, eating, learning - these are all activities that children repeat every day without a second thought. But how were these steps carried out in Gallo-Roman times?
The exhibition invites 3-6 year-olds to discover how their ancestors lived, and what use the remains they have discovered might have been: equipped like archaeologists, children can work on an excavation site and uncover the remains. Like good scientists, they'll record their discoveries, and then, objects in hand, they'll walk through the gateway of time? to discover the past!
The exhibition is divided into 4 parts:
> The site hut, where children receive instructions for their journey back in time
> The excavation site: using their own equipment, the children excavate different areas using archaeologist?s techniques: they locate where each fragment has been found, place it on a large map showing the site as a whole, and reflect on the remains unearthed and their function.
> Restitution: children go through a doorway of time that takes them into a Roman-era house. Fragments of objects tell the story of their lives and the lifestyle of a 5-year-old child in Antiquity. From room to room, they follow the child as he rises, washes, dresses, eats, plays and learns. A display case will also feature additional objects found on the Lattara archaeological site, providing a link with the museum.
> A complementary workshop, featuring a display case of small Playmobil figures, will introduce visitors to the tools and trades of archaeology, and help them understand how an archaeological dig works.
