In the spring and summer of 1945, the Hôtel Lutetia in Paris was the main reception center for survivors of the Nazi camps. Requisitioned by decision of General de Gaulle, it became a control and care center for thousands of deportees. The exhibition tells the story of these four months (April-August 1945) through 15 panels, 124 archive documents, 26 video testimonials and a collection of personal accounts.
It retraces :
The organization of the return of deportees by the Ministry of Prisoners, Deportees and Refugees.
The medical, administrative and logistical reception at the Lutetia and other Parisian sites.
The role of volunteers, associations and families in this process.
The shock and emotion of the public at the scale of the tragedy.
The toll was terrible: 166,000 deported from France, including 76,000 Jews (11,000 of them children); only 48,000 were repatriated, about a third of them via the Lutetia.
Numerous testimonies illustrate the joy of the return, the incomprehension between survivors and relatives, but also the solitude and difficulty of speaking the unspeakable.
