MARTROR in Occitania
Martror (from the Occitan word martres, grave, burial) is a contemporary Occitan festival, inspired by ancient traditions linked to the passage from summer to winter and the memory of ancestors.
? In the farming calendar, the end of October and the beginning of November marked a time of transition: the end of the harvest, the arrival of the long nights, a reminder of the link between the living and the dead.
? In many Occitan regions, symbolic dishes (crespèls, walnuts, new wine, etc.) were prepared and sometimes left "for the dead" on the table after the meal.
? Wakes, storytelling and processions punctuated this moment of collective memory.
Revived in recent years, the Martror aims to reinvent these traditions, combining ancient rituals with contemporary creations, paying tribute to the dead in a spirit of joy and sharing, and giving festive visibility to Occitan culture.
A moment per viure ensems (to live together), between memòria e fèsta, to honor our dead with joy and music.
Program:
- 3:00 pm: Make-up workshops (festive make-up) and jòcs tradicionals (traditional games) for young and old
- 4:00 pm: Grand Parade of the Mandadors (messengers between the living and the dead).
