In Michel Vinaver?s novel, Julien Bême is a soldier in the ranks who takes a step to the side and lays down his weapon: L?Objecteur. Le Pas de Bême revisits this "side step" and unfolds its meaning. Bême is a teenager for whom everything seems to be going well, a good student with no particular difficulties, who one day decides to hand in "blank copies" for all his school exams.
This incomprehensible gesture plunges those close to him, his family, and us, into a maze of perplexity. Is it a break-up, is it a refusal, and above all, what do we do with it? As is often the case in Adrien Béal?s theater, we share in the experience of the actors as they move from one role or unanswered question to another, in the playful complexity of a play written collectively, the result of improvisations that are still being improvised.
