At the start of summer, the Illustre Théâtre de Pézenas presents Molière?s "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" on the terrace of the Château de Flaugergues. A twirling comedy, full of colorful characters!
The story: two young lovers, Eraste and Julie, ward off an undesirable suitor, Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, thanks to the deceptions of the deceitful Sbrigani and his accomplice, Nérine.
In 1705, Jean-Léonor Le Gallois de Grimarest, Molière's first biographer, wrote of the origins of the Pourceaugnac character: "It is said that the Pourceaugnac was made on the occasion of a gentleman from Limousin, who one day during a performance, and in a quarrel he had on the stage with the actors, spread some of the ridicule with which he was charged. He didn't take it far; Molière, in revenge for this country bumpkin, made an entertainment to the taste of the People, who rejoiced greatly at this play, which was performed at Chambord for the entertainment of Louis XIV in September 1669, and in Paris a month later. The work was a great success, and was performed forty-nine times during Molière's lifetime.
