1. The Faculty of Medicine, an historical building

The beating heart of medicine in the city

Montpellier owes its fame as the cradle of medical instruction to its school, the faculty of medicine in the Western world to be continuously in operation since its beginnings.

The guide will take you on a tour of the building, that served in turn as a Benedictine monastery founded in the 14th century, a bishop’s palace and then a school of health, as well as the extraordinary collections of the Conservatoire d’Anatomie Museum (20 min.) and the new Delmas-Orfila-Rouvière Room which houses an unusual anatomical collection from Dr Spitzner’s old sideshow museum.

2. History of Medicine

Eight centuries practising medicine

ViAs a city of tolerance and a cultural melting pot, Montpellier has always hosted students and doctors from around the world.
With this tour, set off on a journey through the medical history of the city, from the requisite Faculty of Medicine* which was attended by Rabelais, Rondelet and Nostradamus, to the Saint-Côme amphitheatre, dedicated to surgical instruction.

Along the way, you will also enter the doors to the Pharmacie de la Miséricorde, a former apothecary which still houses a rich collection of earthenware pieces.

A campus at the cutting edge of technology

The latest feat by Montpellier native and architect François Fontès, the Faculty of Medicine on the Arnaud de Villeneuve Biology & Health Campus is astonishing for its sheer size, like an echo of the institution’s the prestigious past.

Visit one of its cutting edge amphitheatres and some of its classrooms. Be prepared for surprises from this concrete giant, with ribs of Corten steel and mesh.

4. Lapeyronie et l'amphithéâtre St Côme

First Surgeon to the King

From his father’s barbershop to the ultimate recognition as First Surgeon to King Louis XV, discover the life and work of Lapeyronie, an extraordinary surgeon from Montpellier.

Thanks to a bequest from him, the city’s surgeons were able to build the Saint-Côme anatomical amphitheatre, an architectural masterpiece of the 18th century, that you won’t want to miss.

5. School packages for the Faculty of Medicine

Two new visit formulas

For secondary schools: a 1.5 hour visit without the Conservatory, including 3 rooms: the Cloakroom, the Council Chamber and/or the Hall of Acts, as well as the Teatrum Anatomicum (dissection amphitheatre).
