A Sports City Montpellier Sporting thrills

Sporting thrills

For many years now, Montpellier is the only city with Paris that has high level professional clubs in most of the team sports.

In 2018, the 20 minutes newspaper has declared Montpellier the first sportiest city in France ex-aequo with Paris in its classification. Indeed the Metropolis offers a great diversity of disciplines. From popular sports such as football, rugby, handball or volley-ball to lesser known sports such as roller hockey, rugby league, water-polo, ice hockey and many more.

Running

In Montpellier, running enthusiasts put on their trainers more often than elsewhere!

Even if you live in the centre of the city, you can quickly get to the banks of the river Lez as far as Aiguelongue and its pretty hidden corners. There is no shortage of routes to the zoo, to the Peyrou garden, around the Jacques Coeur basin or along the sea in Palavas. And many races are organised, notably the Marathon, as well as a new kind of guided tour: in small strides.

Excursions and hiking

Montpellier is located in the heart of a territory as varied as it is vast: from the surrounding garrigues to the Pic Saint-Loup, to the Cévennes, nature is king!

Put on your trainers, we’ll take you on a walk to discover the beautiful landscapes of our region! See the walks

The Way of St James of Compostella – Chemin de St Jacques

In Montpellier, it is not the pebbles of Little Thumb that we are looking for, but the 300 nails installed on the ground in the city by the municipality to mark the passage of the Way of St James.

Kitesurfing

Born in Montpellier, Kitesurfing is a water sport consisting of gliding with a board on a body of water, pulled by a kite.

Golf

It’s time to prepare your best swing! See the golf courses

Cycling

What could be better than cycling, a mode of transport that combines pleasure and respect for the environment, to reach the sea in slow mode? Or an electric bike ride through the heart of the Camargue? Or cross the department by bike with the Mediterranean by bike and the Via Rhôna? Discover our cycling trips.

Sports clubs

Football is the city’s major sport, but it is not the only one! Here, women’s football, rugby, basketball, hockey… all come together for the pleasure of all. See the sports clubs
