Montpellier's unique historical and authentic specialty.
When candy rhymes with tradition... Grisettes de Montpellier are delicious black balls dusted with white sugar. These delicate confections made from licorice and honey are rooted in the city's culinary history. An iconic souvenir that prolongs the taste of vacation...
An apothecary created this recipe in 1150 at the Faculty of Medicine in Montpellier. Then, the city's merchants used them as small change to sweeten the pilgrims' journey to Compostela.
These candies took the name “Grisettes” in homage to the beautiful ladies of Montpellier, who were coquettish, gallant, and dressed in gray.
In September 2017, the Grisettes de Montpellier brand was bought by Lionel Lopez and André Sembelie.
Their ambition is to wake up this sleeping beauty and make it a true showcase for the city of Montpellier.
On sale at the Montpellier tourist office shop.
The factory where the candies are produced holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label, which rewards French companies for their industrial and artisanal expertise and excellence.
