Montpellier’s the unique, historic and authentic speciality.
The Grisettes de Montpellier are delicious black balls made of 2 symbolic products from Languedoc: honey and liquorice.
An apothecary created the recipe in 1150 at the Medical University of Montpellier. Then, city’s merchants used then as change in order to soften the pilgrim’s voyage towards Compostela. These candies took the name of “Grisettes” in tribute to the beautiful, elegant, courteous ladies from Montpellier dressed in grey.
In September 2017, the brand les Grisettes de Montpellier is bought by Lionel Lopez and André Sembelie. Their hope is to bring back these candies and to make them the showcase of the city of Montpellier.
