The Montpellier Occitanie National Orchestra kicks off its season with a Finnish conductor who has had a meteoric rise: Eva Ollikainen, winner of the Jorma Panula Competition and artistic director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, conducts a program full of contrasting highlights.
First up is Brahms’s Tragic Overture, composed in 1880: a dark and impassioned piece, like a condensed drama. Next, Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger, whose career has been exceptional (spending over 40 years pushing the limits of his instrument), premiered Karen Tanaka’s *Verse of Light* in France; Tanaka is a Japanese composer who trained in Paris under Tristan Murail and Luciano Berio. Her concerto, with its refined atmosphere, blends bursts of light with meditation. Finally, Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, the first of his glorious final trilogy. The opening adagio begins with solemn grandeur, followed by a lively minuet and a sparkling finale. Three works, three worlds: from stormy Romanticism to classical grace, all the way to contemporary creation. An evening that blends tradition and boldness.
