Thanks to its connection to the Mediterranean Sea, the Thau basin is naturally home to a wealth of wildlife, particularly a wide variety of fish. These include, amongst others, sea bream, sea bass and red mullet.
The basin is also known for its shellfish reserve, which is in fact the result of several centuries of attempts at aquaculture. Thanks to all these efforts, there are now several oyster and mussel farms, as well as oyster and clam farms, which can be seen behind the scenes at the famous seafood restaurants dotted around the basin.
