PLACE SAINT-ROCH

Religious site, Church and priory in Montpellier
  • After a stroll through some charming pedestrian streets, Saint Roch church is revealed. Built in the 19th century, it is dedicated to the city's patron saint and faces a huge trompe-l'œil that is a popular backdrop for selfie takers.

Sit down for a minute on the forecourt in front of the church and take time to admire the trompe l'oeil on the opposite building, with numerous references to Montpellier History : Saint-James of Compostella scallop-shells, pharmacy jar…

If you have time, relax on a mid-sun mid-shadow terrace. A fountain with a children's playground, numerous cafés and small restaurants
    complete the picture.

The peaceful day-time atmosphere becomes more festive in the evening, as the wine bars and restaurants fill up.

Note the absence of statues, and gargoyles: Saint Roch’s construction was funded by a lottery and an appeal for donations, which did not raise the funds required! As a result, the church was never completed.
