Description
Don't miss the "PAUL AMAR" exhibition, from May 05 to August 29 2026 at the Musée d'Art Brut in Montpellier.
Born in? Algiers on August 23, 1919, Sephardic Jew and Catholic, repatriated to France where he lived, Paul Amar is indisputably the king of shells.
A former hairdresser and cab driver who spent his vacations on the beaches of Vendée, it was in 1974, at the age of 55, that he discovered by chance what was to become his unique creative material. Presented in paintings lit from the depths of a television set, or in the form of masks or characters, his ultra kitsch art pushes de?corative overload and outrageous color to the threshold of the marvelous.
His works, inspired by his Algerian childhood and sometimes featuring sexual themes, resembled bas-reliefs bursting with color. It was a report by Philippe Lespinasse on the television program Thalassa that brought him to prominence, followed by an exhibition at the Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris Paris, in 1998. Paul Amar?s work is on permanent display in major art institutions: Collection de l? Lausanne, Musée des Arts Buissonniers en Sud-Aveyron, LaM a? Villeneuve d?Ascq, Muse?e du Visionnaire in Zurich, Collection Treger-Saint-Sylvestre in Porto, la Fabuloserie in Dicey, Muse?e d'Art Brut International in Montpellier, Musée des Arts Buissonniers in Paris Montpellier, Musée des Arts Buissonnier en Aveyron.
