Satie in Big Band? The proposal may come as a surprise, given that the name of the Honfleur-born composer is so closely associated with his famous pieces for solo piano. But after all, hadn't Debussy himself already revealed the shimmering colors in his orchestration of the Gymnopédies?
By bringing together a jazz quartet and fifteen brass and woodwind sections, Johane Myran offers us his own loving, offbeat re-reading of a unique work, through a few choice pieces: two Gymnopédies and a Gnossienne, of course, but also excerpts from Sports et Divertissements, the song Je te veux, or the famous Vexations and their motif repeated to the point of obsession.
Served by a phalanx of exceptional soloists, Satie?s universe is revealed in a new light, true to his blend of quirky humor and bittersweet melancholy.
