Description
As part of the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier
Tristan et Isolde is on the program on July 11. A week later, we return to Wagner with the five Lieder written in 1857 to poems by Mathilde Wesendonck, which are in a way sketches of this great work.
Five fragments of an amorous discourse: the angel inaugurates the cycle, the dreams close it; in the center, the greenhouse is the place of suffocating heat; on either side of this central pivot, the renunciation of desire and pain keep watch in the shadows. Mahler, for his part, began his career as a composer by writing Lieder, then broadened his horizons to include symphonies, eventually combining the two genres with The Song of the Earth.
His Fifth Symphony, made famous by the great lake of music that is the Adagietto, is also conceived in five movements around a crackling scherzo: two tempestuous pages precede it, followed by two consolatory movements.
