1. ANTIGONE, A DISTRICT WITH AMBITIONS
Discovering an avant-garde project
Launched at the end of the 1970s, Antigone is a district that will revolutionise Montpellier by taking the city in the direction of the sea. Stretching over 36 hectares between the Ecusson and the flower of the Lez, this neoclassical-inspired district is surprisingly socially mixed, combining low-cost housing, shops, offices, major facilities and statues reminiscent of Greek antiquity.
Take a tour of Antigone, from the Place du Nombre d’Or to the top of the Hôtel de Région, and immerse yourself in this avant-garde project conceived by former mayor Georges Frêche and Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill.
